A Wizard of Earthsea
by Ursula K. LeGuin
Hi I'm Jake Taylor and I am eleven years old. I go to Stella Maris Catholic Regional School in Sag Harbor. I enjoy reading books, playing tennis and competitive swimming.
A Wizard of Earthsea is a very interesting book, about redemption, power, and friendship. This book takes place in the world of Earthsea. Earthsea is a place of many islands, which are all populated.
On one of the main islands called Gont, young Duny or so his Aunt calls him, heard his Aunt (for his parents were dead) chant strange words, and goats start flocking around her. Duny repeats these words and the goats chase him. His aunt sees that there is great power in this boy and his chants. Ogion the Silent, one of the greatest wizards of Earthsea, wants to take Duny now known as Sparrowhawk under his wing. Ogion Sparowhawk’s name to Ged and they set off on an adventure which consists of shadows, a wizard school, and don’t forget magic.
On a scale of one to ten I would give this book a nine. People of all ages would enjoy the book. The inventiveness and creativity is what completes it. I loved the book but even though I thought at times it lacked a clear plot. The story-line kept changing which made it slightly confusing to the reader. When LeGuin throws different stories at you and you do not know what to expect next you have to want to stay with it. I did. I would still recommend this book to anyone who enjoys stories filled with fantasy and adventure.
