Southampton: We discovered the recipe for turning a grey day bright this past Saturday: Sylvia Lehrer, author, chef, and teacher, shared her expertise and experiences with her many fans in our Southampton store. In her current book, Savoring the Hamptons (Running Press), Lehrer presents an anecdotal picture of the East End and its local farmers and weaves them into recipes highlighting seasonal produce.
Having lived on the East End for over 20 years, Lehrer incorporates into her book the insider charms of the area, including the ice sailing which occurs on Mecox Bay during the winter. Local vineyards place high in the book as well, and pairings are suggested with the dishes.
If you haven't picked up her book, rush to grab a signed copy and begin cooking with your own home grown herbs — Sylvia's recommendation — and local produce to delight your family and friends.
Sag Harbor: We welcomed Rameshwar Das to Sag Harbor on Saturday evening, when he read passages from and discussed his new book, Be Love Now: The Path of the Heart (HarperOne), a collaboration with Ram Das.
Rain jackets were draped over the backs of many chairs as the audience listened to the presentation. He welcomed questions and comments throughout the evening, and conducted a question-and-answer session at the end.
Rameshwar Das is a writer and photographer who met Ram Dass in 1967, and they have been friends ever since. He was inspired to go to India and was given the name Rameshwar Das by Neem Karoli Baba.
East Hampton: Saturday's torrential rains in East Hampton could not keep a large and welcoming crowd from turning out to meet Nicole Bigar and to discuss Koukoumanias, her new and vibrant book of paintings and insights.
We at BookHampton were grateful to host this acclaimed artist, a native Parisian who has been a part of our local art community for many years. Ms. Bigar spoke about the sources of her inspiration, from the religions of Asia to the natural light of the East End. But she also stressed the importance for the young artist of avoiding influence and of following one's own path. In spite of the rough weather outside, it was a warm and happy gathering, made more gracious by the generosity of Ms. Bigar, her family, and her friends.
