Talia Carner, author of Jerusalem Maiden (Harper, 14.99), spoke Saturday to a standing-room only crowd of readers in East Hampton.
Inspired by Carner's own grandmother, who was known for her fabulous crocheted creations, Jerusalem Maiden tells the story of a young Israeli woman who must decide between her passions and her faith.
Carner. who has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize, explained the limited options her grandmother's generation of young women faced. Expected to be only wives and mother's, education for young girls in Israel was not a given.
Jerusalem Maiden, which has been likened to The Red Tent by Anita Diamant, is Carner's first Harper Paperback. Carner's award-winning personal essays appeared in The New York Times, Chocolate For Women anthologies, Cup of Comfort and The Best Jewish Writing 2003. Her short stories Have been published in Midstream, Lynx Eye, River Sedge, Moxie, Lilith, Rosebud, Confrontation and North Atlantic Review.
