A Letter to Our Neighbors and Readers

Dear Neighbors and Readers:

We don't know if you've heard, but last week Jeff Bezos and Amazon announced a full out campaign intended to put independent booksellers like BookHampton out of business.

In an aggressive and unconscionable move, they offered a reward to customers who browse at local stores and then buy the product from Amazon. This maneuver, coming just in time for Holiday shopping, will have the effect of stripping independent stores of income and permanently closing many doors.

BookHampton is fighting back. We need you to help us.

For over forty years, BookHampton has been an integral part of our Villages. Our tradition of community involvement has reached way beyond book-knowledge and personal service. We have offered our support to families, schools, charities and, of course, unlike the Amazonians we pay our taxes.

We are asking you to keep in mind the simple joy of going to BookHampton, and to consider how serious this threat is to our small bookstore. Don Quixote, translated by Edith Grossman, is available at BookHampton.
You don’t have to have  begun (or finished) in order to join us at our first meeting. Join Amy Katz for three sessions as we read, discuss, and adventure with this beloved character.

We’ll continue the BookQuest with Portrait of a Lady by Henry James (the quest for womanhood), An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser (the quest for the American Dream), and finally, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald & American Pastoral by Philip Roth (the trappings of the quest for success).

Get cozy with a good book

James here… Well, this has been quite the winter, hasn’t it? It’s warm and cozy in my store, though, so I invite you to curl up with a good book, just like I am! Tell my people what you'd like to read, and BookHampton will ship it to you for free!

-- The Three Weissmans of Westport by Cathleen Schine -- When a 78 year old woman is divorced by her husband and tossed from her Central Park West apartment, her two loving daughters gather round. It’s a little Austen, and a lot of love.

When you come in to any of our stores, or call us on the phone, our experienced staff will be happy to help you choose books for everyone on your list. We specialize in finding just the right book for anyone -- from the man who reads everything just as long as it's nonfiction, to the grandchild who's sure that the world stopped spinning when the Harry Potter series ended.

BookHampton also has a great way to tote your holiday gifts -- our new blue bags. They're available at all of our stores. And don't forget that along with books and DVD's our Amagansett store now has a wonderful selection of toys and games.

Our Latest Addition -- It's a Toy!

Just in time for the holidays, BookHampton in Amagansett Square has classic toys and games! Your childhood favorites like Scrabble, Monopoly, and Chutes & Ladders are now available. Pick-up sticks, dominoes, chess, and checkers -- when was the last time you played? Grab a Slinky, yo-yo, Silly Putty or Colorforms and remind yourself that good old-fashioned fun is still the best kind! There are puppets, wooden blocks, and trains, too -- let your imagination soar! We have holiday movies on DVD, folk music CD's, too.

Our new Amagansett Square store is filled with the stuff of childhood, along with a wonderful selection of books for everyone. Stop by this weekend, or any time, and find the perfect toys and books for you and your family.

BookHampton in Amagansett is now open on Sundays and Mondays from 9:30-5:30, Fridays from 9:30-6:00, and Saturdays from 9:30-7:00. BookHampton is Running for Ellen

This Saturday, November 21st, BookHampton will be there  for Ellen's Run. For every book purchased by our wonderful friends and customers, BookHampton will match the full amount and donate it to Ellen's Run.

Yes, you read that correctly -- no strings, no, catches, no kidding. BookHampton is running for Ellen all day on Saturday, November 21st at our stores in East Hampton, Southampton, and Sag Harbor. When you make a purchase, we'll donate that amount to Ellen's Run.

Ellen's Run is sponsored by the Ellen Hermanson Foundation, committed to caring for women through early breast cancer detection, pain management, support for survivors and their families, and the Ellen Hermanson Breast Center at Southampton Hospital -- a self-contained state of the art center for women on the East End of Long Island.
